Medical Coding Job Duties

Bradford RI patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the front line of the billing systems for Bradford RI private practices and healthcare organizations. They have the responsibility to review the treatment records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment utilized. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources including physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Medical Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accuracy, but must have a working knowledge of all private payer and government rules that impact coding also. Inaccurately coded claims can result in services not being covered, services being paid at a decreased rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Bradford RI physicians and medical facilities many thousands of dollars in revenue every year, a proficient medical coder is an important asset for any healthcare organization. They can work in every type of healthcare facility, including family practices, hospitals, clinics and urgent care centers. It is not uncommon for seasoned medical coders to operate at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Biller Job Functions

medical billing collects revenue in Bradford RI As essential as the medical coder’s job is, it would be for nothing without the contribution of the medical biller whose labors bring in revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to Bradford RI healthcare organizations and are literally responsible for keeping them in business. Frequently the coder and biller are the same individual within a healthcare facility, but they can also be two individual specialists. When the coder has completed her or his duty, the biller uses the codes furnished to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicaid or Medicare. After being paid by the applicable entity, patients can then be charged for deductibles or additional out of pocket costs. On a regular basis, a medical biller can also do any of the following:

  • Check health insurance coverages for patients and help them with billing concerns or questions
  • Check on submitted patient claims and appeal those that have been denied
  • Act as an intermediary between the medical provider, the insurance companies and the patients for proper claim settlement
  • Create and manage Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and handle unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billers not only work for private practices, but also Bradford RI emergency care facilities, hospitals, nursing homes or medical groups. They may work in every type of medical facility that relies on the revenues generated by billing third party payers and patients.

While it is not required in many cases to earn a professional certification, the program you select should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). Most schools simply require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to be eligible. The fastest way to becoming either a medical coder or biller (or both) is to obtain a certificate, which generally takes about one year to finish. An Associate Degree is also an option for a more expansive education, which for most colleges calls for 2 years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees in medical coding and billing are not widely available. When your education has been concluded, although not mandated in most states, you may want to earn a professional certification. Certification is an excellent means for those new to the field to show prospective Bradford RI employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their career. A few of the organizations that provide certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Graduating from an accredited medical coding and billing program, together with obtaining a professional certification, are the best ways to advance your new career and succeed in the fast growing Bradford RI medical care field.

They can be especially attractive to individuals living in Bradford RI who plan on attending school while still working or have other obligations that make going to classes on campus challenging. And as an additional benefit, online programs are often cheaper than the traditional classroom options. Costs for such items as tuition, study materials and commuting may be decreased or eliminated. But be careful, as not all online schools are reputable. For that reason it’s important to establish that the online course you choose is accredited to guarantee a superior education. We will cover the advantages of accreditation in the next section. Just make sure to establish that any online college you are looking at is accredited by one of the national accrediting agencies, such as the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are disciplined enough to commit yourself to this type of learning, then obtaining your certificate or degree online might be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Medical Coder and Biller Courses

Questions to ask Bradford RI medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a general idea just what a medical biller and coder does, in addition to what training options are available, you must start the process of comparing colleges. But since there a large number of training options available at community colleges as well as trade, vocational and technical schools within the Bradford RI area, you need to have a ready list of questions to analyze each one. And when you add all of the online schools that offer medical coding and billing classes, the task can become rather formidable. As we have already discussed, cost and location are going to be important issues, especially if you have a limited budget and will be commuting to classes from your Bradford residence. And whether or not the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting process also. So let’s take a look at several of the other questions that you should ask the schools you are reviewing so that you can compare each one and make the right choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s important that the school and program you pick are accredited by a respected accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Not only will accreditation help guarantee that the education you get will be of superior quality, it may help secure future employment also. A number of Bradford RI medical organizations will only hire entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing training course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for colleges that have received an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to choosing a medical coding and billing program, check out what its reputation and ranking are among other colleges. This is particularly imperative if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will mostly be relying on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, making sure that the school is accredited is a first step. Checking with school rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school as well. An alternative is to check with some Bradford RI medical organizations that you might have an interest in working for and find out which colleges they recommend. Keep in mind that even if the college itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be highly regarded.

Is there a Job Assistance Program? Obtaining employment in Bradford RI after graduation in your new field might be challenging without the help of a job placement program. Find out if the colleges you are considering have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is a good indication that the billing and coding college has a sizable network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also implies that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School Located? If you are intending on commuting to class from your Bradford RI residence, then the location of the college will be of prime importance. Obviously if you enroll in an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the school will not be a consideration. One thing to bear in mind is that if you go to classes at a junior or community college, most require a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you might want to first consider those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Total Cost? Medical billing and coding certification courses can differ in cost based on the type of credential earned and the length of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenditures also consist of such things as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial assistance might be available to help reduce some of the expense, so don’t forget to check with the school’s financial aid department to see what is available in Bradford RI. Of course if you decide to enroll in an online school, a portion of these added costs, particularly for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Fit your Schedule? Many students continue working while going to college and require a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Bradford RI, confirm that they are available at those times. If you can only attend on a part time schedule, make certain that the school you pick offers that alternative. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up classes missed due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
