Medical Coding Job Summary

Windsor PA patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Windsor PA private practices and healthcare organizations. They have the responsibility to analyze the treatment records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services can be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are various codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Medical Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accurate reporting, but must have a working knowledge of all private payer and government regulations that impact coding as well. Improperly coded claims may lead to services not being paid for, services being paid for at a reduced rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can literally cost Windsor PA physicians and medical facilities many thousands of dollars in earnings annually, a reliable medical coder is a vital asset for any healthcare organization. They can operate in every kind of healthcare facility, including family practices, hospitals, clinics and critical care centers. It is not unusual for experienced medical coders to operate at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Billing Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Windsor PA As important as the medical coder’s role is, it would be for naught without the collaboration of the medical biller whose efforts generate revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to Windsor PA medical organizations and are essentially responsible for keeping their doors open. Often the coder and biller can be the same individual within a medical organization, but they can also be 2 individual professionals. Once the coder has carried out her or his task, the biller utilizes the codes provided to complete and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicaid or Medicare. After they have been paid by the applicable entity, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles and additional out of pocket expenses. On a regular basis, a medical billing clerk may also do any of the following:

  • Check medical insurance coverages for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on submitted patient claims and appeal any that have been denied
  • Work as a mediator between the healthcare provider, the insurance companies and the patients for accurate claim settlement
  • Generate and control Accounts Receivables reports
  • Generate and deal with unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billers not only work for family practices, but also Windsor PA emergency care facilities, hospitals, nursing homes or medical groups. They may work in every type of healthcare facility that depends on the incomes generated from billing patients and third party payers.

Medical Billing and Coding Training and Certification

instructor with Windsor PA medical billing and coding class studentIt’s essential that you obtain your instruction from a reputable school, whether it’s a technical school, vocational school or community college. While it is not a requirement in many cases to attain a professional certification, the school you select should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). The majority of colleges just require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to be eligible. The most expedient way to becoming either a medical coder or biller (or both) is to earn a certificate, which generally takes about one year to finish. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more expansive education, which for almost all schools requires 2 years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical coding and billing are not widely available. When your training has been concluded, although not mandated in the majority of states, you may wish to earn a professional certification. Certification is an effective means for those new to the profession to show potential Windsor PA employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their occupation. A few of the organizations that make available certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Completing an accredited medical billing and coding course, along with attaining a professional certification, are the best ways to advance your new vocation and succeed in the rapid growing Windsor PA medical care field.

They can be especially attractive to those living in Windsor PA who plan on going to school while continuing to work or have other commitments that make going to classes on campus difficult. And as an added advantage, online schools are frequently less expensive than the standard classroom alternatives. Costs for such items as tuition, study materials and commuting may be decreased or eliminated. But be careful, as not all online courses are reputable. That’s why it’s imperative to establish that the online course you enroll in is accredited to ensure a premium education. We will address the advantages of accreditation in the next segment. Just make sure to establish that any online instruction you are considering is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, such as the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are dedicated enough to devote yourself to this type of learning, then earning your degree or certificate online might be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Medical Billing and Coding Colleges

Questions to ask Windsor PA medical billing and coding schoolsNow that you have a general idea just what a medical coder and biller does, as well as what education options are available, you must start the process of researching colleges. But since there many training options offered at community colleges and trade, vocational and technical schools within the Windsor PA area, you should have a ready list of questions to evaluate each one. And when you add all of the online schools that offer medical billing and coding classes, the task can become somewhat formidable. As we have already covered, expense and location are going to be significant factors, especially if you have a modest budget and will be commuting to classes from your Windsor home. And verifying that the program and school are accredited should be part of your vetting process as well. So let’s review several of the other questions that you should ask the schools you are looking at so that you can evaluate each one and make the right choice.

Is the School Accredited? It’s essential that the program and school you pick are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the training you get will be of superior quality, it may help secure future employment also. Many Windsor PA medical facilities will only employ entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing training program. And financial assistance and student loans are in many cases only available for schools that have received an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to picking a medical coding and billing program, check out what its ranking and reputation are among other programs. This is especially relevant if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will mostly be relying on the quality of your education. As we have covered, confirming that the school is accredited is an initial step. Checking with school rating organizations, for example U.S. News and World Report, can validate the quality of the school as well. Another option is to get in touch with several Windsor PA medical organizations that you may have an interest in working for and ask which programs they suggest. Remember that even if the college itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be well regarded.

Is there a Job Placement Program? Finding a job in Windsor PA after graduating in your new field may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. Ask if the colleges you are considering have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is a good indication that the coding and billing college has a substantial network of healthcare employers where they can place their graduates. It also indicates that the college’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the College’s Location? If you are anticipating commuting to class from your Windsor PA home, then the location of the campus will be of prime importance. Of course if you select an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the school will not be a factor. One thing to keep in mind is that if you attend classes at a junior or community college, many charge a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you might prefer to first research those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Total Expense? Medical billing and coding training programs can differ in cost based on the type of credential earned and the amount of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenses also include such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid might be accessible to help offset a portion of the cost, so don’t forget to check with the college’s financial assistance department to find out what is available in Windsor PA. Of course if you decide to enroll in an online college, a portion of these additional costs, particularly for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Accessible that Accommodate your Schedule? Many students keep working while going to college and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Windsor PA, make sure that they are available at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the college you pick provides that option. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up classes missed because of illness, work or family emergencies.
