Medical Coding Job Duties

West Mifflin PA patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the forefront of the billing systems for West Mifflin PA private practices and hospitals. They have the responsibility to review the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services may be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment used. There are multiple codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders depend on information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a working knowledge of all government and private payer rules that influence coding as well. Improperly coded claims may lead to services not being paid for, services being paid at a lower rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can literally cost West Mifflin PA doctors and hospitals multiple thousands of dollars in revenue each year, a proficient medical coder is a vital asset to the healthcare team. They can work in every type of healthcare facility, including family practices, hospitals, clinics and critical care centers. It is not uncommon for professional medical coders to work at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Most schools simply require that you earn either a high school diploma or a GED to be eligible. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more comprehensive education, which for the majority of programs calls for 2 years of studies. Once your education has been concluded, although not required in the majority of states, you may want to earn a professional certification. Just some of the organizations that offer certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

That’s why it’s essential to confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited to ensure a superior education. We will cover the advantages of accreditation in the next section. Just be sure to establish that any online school you are considering is accredited by one of the national accrediting agencies, for example the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Points to Ask Medical Billing and Coding Training Programs

Questions to ask West Mifflin PA medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a better idea just what a medical coder and biller does, in addition to what training options are offered, you need to start the process of comparing schools. But since there many training options offered at community colleges as well as trade, vocational and technical schools within the West Mifflin PA area, you must have a ready list of questions to analyze each one. And when you add all of the online schools that offer medical coding and billing classes, the project can become somewhat daunting. As we have already discussed, location and cost are going to be important issues, particularly if you have a limited budget and will be driving to classes from your West Mifflin home. And confirming that the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting process also. So let’s review some of the additional questions that you should ask the programs you are considering so that you can compare each one and make the best choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s essential that the program and school you select are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the education you receive will be of the highest quality, it could help with your future employment as well. A number of West Mifflin PA healthcare organizations will only hire entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding educational program. And financial assistance and student loans are in many cases only available for colleges that have earned an accreditation.

What is the Program’s Reputation? Prior to enrolling in a medical billing and coding school, check out what its reputation and ranking are compared to other colleges. This is especially imperative if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will basically be evaluating you based on the quality of your education. As we have addressed, making sure that the program is accredited is an initial step. Checking with college rating organizations, for example U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school also. Another option is to call a few West Mifflin PA medical organizations that you might have an interest in working for and ask which colleges they recommend. Bear in mind that even when the school itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be well regarded.

Is there a Job Placement Program? Finding a job in West Mifflin PA after graduation in your new field might be difficult without the help of a job assistance program. Find out if the colleges you are considering have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is an excellent indication that the billing and coding school has a significant network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also suggests that the school’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School Located? If you are planning on commuting to class from your West Mifflin PA home, then the location of the school will be of significant importance. Of course if you choose an medical billing and coding online program, then the location of the school will not be a factor. One thing to bear in mind is that if you attend classes at a junior or community college, many charge a higher tuition for enrollees that reside outside of their districts. So you may prefer to first consider those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Expense? Medical billing and coding training courses can differ in cost depending on the type of credential obtained and the length of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenditures also include such things as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial aid may be obtainable to help offset a portion of the cost, so make sure to contact the college’s financial assistance department to find out what is offered in West Mifflin PA. Naturally if you decide to attend an online college, some of these added costs, such as for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Accessible that Match your Schedule? Many students keep working while going to school and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near West Mifflin PA, verify that they are available at those times. If you can only enroll on a part-time schedule, make sure that the school you select provides that option. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up classes missed because of work, illness or family emergencies.
