Medical Coding Job Functions

Wheelersburg OH patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the forefront of the billing systems for Wheelersburg OH private practices and healthcare organizations. They have the responsibility to examine the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services can be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment utilized. There are various codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders depend on information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Medical Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a working knowledge of all government and private payer regulations that impact coding also. Inaccurately coded claims can lead to services not being covered, services being paid at a decreased rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Wheelersburg OH doctors and hospitals multiple thousands of dollars in income annually, a proficient medical coder is a vital asset for any healthcare organization. They can work in every type of healthcare facility, including private practices, clinics, hospitals and critical care centers. It is not unusual for professional medical coders to work at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Billing Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Wheelersburg OH As essential as the medical coder’s job is, it would be for nothing without the collaboration of the medical biller whose labors bring in revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to Wheelersburg OH healthcare facilities and are literally responsible for keeping their doors open. In many cases the coder and biller may be the same man or woman within a healthcare facility, but they can also be 2 individual professionals. Once the coder has completed his or her duty, the biller utilizes the codes furnished to complete and submit claim forms to insurance carriers, Medicare or Medicaid. After being paid by the appropriate entity, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles and other out of pocket expenses. On a routine basis, a medical biller might also do any of the following:

  • Confirm health insurance coverages for patients and help them with billing questions or concerns
  • Check on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been denied
  • Act as an intermediary between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for accurate claim settlement
  • Produce and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Generate and manage unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only are employed by family practices, but also Wheelersburg OH hospitals, urgent care facilities, nursing homes or medical groups. They may work in every kind of medical facility that depends on the revenues generated from billing third party payers and patients.

While it is not a requirement in many cases to attain a professional certification, the school you select should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). The majority of colleges only require that you earn either a high school diploma or a GED to qualify. The fastest way to become either a medical biller or coder (or both) is to earn a certificate, which usually takes about a year to finish. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more expansive education, which for the majority of colleges requires two years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical billing and coding are not widely offered. When your education has been completed, although not mandated in most states, you may want to attain a professional certification. Certification is an effective means for those new to the field to show prospective Wheelersburg OH employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their career. A few of the organizations that make available certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Graduating from an accredited medical billing and coding program, combined with attaining a professional certification, are the best ways to accelerate your new career and succeed in the rapid growing Wheelersburg OH healthcare field.

Things to Ask Medical Coding and Billing Training Programs

But since there many training options available at community colleges and trade, vocational and technical schools within the Wheelersburg OH area, you need to have a prepared list of questions in order to assess each one. As we have already addressed, expense and location are going to be significant factors, particularly if you have a modest budget and will be driving to classes from your Wheelersburg residence. And confirming that the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting process as well. So let’s take a look at some of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing so that you can evaluate each one and make the best choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s essential that the program and school you decide on are accredited by a respected accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Not only will accreditation help confirm that the training you receive will be of the highest quality, it could help with your future employment as well. A number of Wheelersburg OH medical facilities will only employ entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding educational course. And financial aid and student loans are frequently only available for programs that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to enrolling in a medical billing and coding school, find out what its ranking and reputation are among other schools. This is especially relevant if you have no experience in the profession, since potential employers will basically be evaluating you based on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, making sure that the college is accredited is an initial step. Checking with school rating organizations, for instance U.S. News and World Report, can confirm the quality of the school also. Another option is to call several Wheelersburg OH medical organizations that you may be interested in working for and find out which colleges they recommend. Keep in mind that even if the college itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be well regarded.

Is there an Employment Referral Program? Finding a job in Wheelersburg OH after graduation in your new field might be difficult without the help of a job assistance program. Check if the schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is an excellent indication that the billing and coding college has a sizable network of medical care employers where they can place their graduates. It also indicates that the school’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the College’s Location? If you are planning on commuting to class from your Wheelersburg OH home, then the location of the college will be of significant importance. Naturally if you select an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the school will not be a factor. One thing to bear in mind is that if you go to classes at a community or junior college, many charge a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you might want to first look at those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Expense? Medical billing and coding certification programs can differ in cost depending on the type of credential acquired and the length of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenses also consist of such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial assistance may be available to help reduce some of the expense, so make sure to get in touch with the school’s financial aid department to find out what is offered in Wheelersburg OH. Naturally if you decide to enroll in an online college, a portion of these additional costs, such as for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Offered that Fit your Schedule? Many students continue working while going to school and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Wheelersburg OH, confirm that they are offered at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, check that the program you enroll in provides that alternative. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up classes missed because of sickness, work or family responsibilities.
