Medical Coding Job Description

Ruby Valley NV patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the front line of the billing systems for Ruby Valley NV private practices and healthcare organizations. They have the responsibility to analyze the treatment records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment used. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all government and private payer rules that impact coding as well. Inaccurately coded claims may result in services not being covered, services being paid for at a decreased rate, or the provider being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can in fact cost Ruby Valley NV doctors and hospitals multiple thousands of dollars in earnings each year, a proficient medical coder is an important asset for any healthcare team. They can work in any kind of healthcare facility, including private practices, clinics, hospitals and critical care centers. It is not uncommon for experienced medical coders to operate at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Billing Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Ruby Valley NV As essential as the medical coder’s function is, it would be for naught without the collaboration of the medical biller whose efforts produce revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Ruby Valley NV medical facilities and are essentially responsible for keeping their doors open. Frequently the biller and coder can be the same man or woman within a medical organization, but they can also be two independent professionals. Once the coder has completed her or his job, the biller utilizes the codes provided to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After being paid by the appropriate entity, patients can then be charged for deductibles and other out of pocket costs. On a routine basis, a medical billing clerk can also do any of the following:

  • Confirm health insurance benefits for patients and assist them with billing questions or concerns
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal any that have been declined
  • Act as an intermediate between the medical provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for proper claim settlement
  • Generate and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Create and manage unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billers not only work for family practices, but also Ruby Valley NV emergency care facilities, hospitals, nursing homes or medical groups. They may practice in any kind of medical facility that depends on the revenues generated from billing third party payers and patients.

Medical Coder and Biller Education and Certification

instructor with Ruby Valley NV medical billing and coding class studentIt’s imperative that you receive your training from a reputable school, whether it’s a trade school, vocational school or community college. Even though it is not required in many cases to obtain a professional certification, the program you choose should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). Most colleges simply require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to appy. The quickest way to become either a medical biller or coder (or both) is to attain a certificate, which generally takes about a year to finish. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more comprehensive education, which for almost all schools calls for 2 years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees in medical coding and billing are not abundantly offered. Once your education has been concluded, although not mandated in the majority of states, you may desire to earn a professional certification. Certification is a great means for those new to the profession to show potential Ruby Valley NV employers that they are not only qualified but committed to their occupation. Just some of the organizations that make available certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Completing an accredited medical coding and billing course, in conjunction with obtaining a professional certification, are the best ways to accelerate your new profession and succeed in the rapid growing Ruby Valley NV healthcare industry.

Medical Billing and Coding Online Courses

Ruby Valley NV student attending medical coding training onlineIf you are looking for flexibility and the convenience of attending classes from home, then choosing a medical billing and coding online course may be a good option. They can be particularly attractive to individuals living in Ruby Valley NV who anticipate attending school while still working or have other commitments that make attending classes on campus difficult. And as an added advantage, online schools are frequently cheaper than the standard classroom options. Expenses for such items as tuition, commuting and study materials may be reduced or eliminated. But be careful, as not all online schools are reputable. That’s why it’s essential to confirm that any online program you choose is accredited to ensure a quality education. We will address the benefits of accreditation in the next section. Just make sure to establish that any online training you are looking at is accredited by one of the national accrediting agencies, such as the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are dedicated enough to commit yourself to this style of learning, then earning your certificate or degree online may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Medical Coding and Billing Training Programs

Questions to ask Ruby Valley NV medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a general idea what a medical coder and biller does, as well as what training options are offered, you must start the process of evaluating colleges. But since there many training options available at community colleges as well as trade, vocational and technical schools within the Ruby Valley NV area, you should have a prepared list of questions to analyze each one. And when you add all of the online schools that offer medical coding and billing classes, the task can become rather formidable. As we have already discussed, expense and location are going to be significant factors, particularly if you have a modest budget and will be commuting to classes from your Ruby Valley residence. And confirming that the school and program are accredited must be part of your vetting procedure as well. So let’s take a look at some of the other questions that you should ask the schools you are looking at so that you can evaluate each one and make the best choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s crucial that the program and school you decide on are accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Not only will accreditation help confirm that the education you get will be of superior quality, it could help with your future employment also. Many Ruby Valley NV medical facilities will only employ entry level applicants that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding educational course. And financial assistance and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for schools that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Before selecting a medical coding and billing program, find out what its ranking and reputation are compared to other schools. This is particularly imperative if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will mostly be relying on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, verifying that the college is accredited is an initial step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can validate the quality of the school as well. Another option is to contact several Ruby Valley NV medical organizations that you may have an interest in working for and find out which programs they recommend. Remember that even if the school itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be well regarded.

Is there an Employment Assistance Program? Obtaining a job in Ruby Valley NV after graduation in your new profession might be difficult without the help of a job placement program. Find out if the schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing school has a considerable network of medical care employers where they can place their graduates. It also suggests that the college’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are intending on driving to class from your Ruby Valley NV home, then the location of the college will be of prime importance. Naturally if you choose an online medical billing and coding program, then the location of the school will not be important. One thing to bear in mind is that if you go to classes at a junior or community college, most require a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you may want to first consider those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Cost? Medical coding and billing training courses can fluctuate in cost depending on the type of credential obtained and the length of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenses also consist of such things as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial assistance might be available to help offset a portion of the expense, so make sure to check with the school’s financial aid department to find out what is offered in Ruby Valley NV. Naturally if you decide to enroll in an online school, some of these added costs, particularly for commuting may be lessened or even eliminated.

Are Classes Offered that Match your Schedule? Many students continue working while going to school and need a flexible class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Ruby Valley NV, make sure that they are offered at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time schedule, confirm that the school you enroll in offers that alternative. Also, find out what the process is for making up classes missed due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Ruby Ridge

Ruby Ridge was the site of an eleven-day siege near Naples, Idaho, U.S., beginning on August 21, 1992, when Randy Weaver, members of his immediate family, and family friend Kevin Harris resisted agents of the United States Marshals Service (USMS) and the Hostage Rescue Team of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI HRT). Following a Marshals Service reconnoiter of the Weaver property pursuant to a bench warrant for Weaver after his failure to appear on firearms charges, an initial encounter between six US marshals and the Weavers resulted in a shootout and the deaths of Deputy US Marshal William Francis Degan, age 42, the Weavers' son Samuel (Sammy), age 14, and Weaver's family dog (Striker). In the subsequent siege of the Weaver residence, led by the FBI, Weaver's 43-year-old wife Vicki was killed by FBI sniper fire. All casualties occurred on the first two days of the operation. The siege and stand-off were ultimately resolved by civilian negotiators, with the surrender and arrest of Kevin Harris on August 30, and the surrender of Randy Weaver and the surviving Weaver children the next day.

Randy Weaver and Kevin Harris were subsequently arraigned on a variety of federal criminal charges, including first-degree murder for the death of Deputy US Marshal W.F. Degan. Harris was acquitted of all charges, and Weaver was subsequently acquitted of all charges except for the original bail condition violation for the arms charges and for having missed his original court date. He was fined US$10,000 and sentenced to 18 months in prison. He was credited with time served plus an additional three months. He was then released.[1][2]

During the federal criminal trial of Weaver and Harris, Weaver's attorney Gerry Spence made accusations of "criminal wrongdoing" against the agencies involved in the incident, in particular, the FBI, the USMS, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), and the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for Idaho. At the completion of the trial, the Department of Justice's Office of Professional Responsibility formed the Ruby Ridge Task Force (RRTF) to investigate Spence's charges. A redacted HTML version of the RRTF report was publicly released by Lexis Counsel Connect, an information service for attorneys, which raised questions about the conduct and policies of all of the participating agencies. A PDF version of the report was later posted by the Justice Department.[3][4]
