Medical Coder Job Functions

Wewahitchka FL patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the front line of the billing systems for Wewahitchka FL medical practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to review the treatment records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services can be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment utilized. There are several codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders depend on information from sources such as nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Medical Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accuracy, but must have a working knowledge of all private payer and government regulations that influence coding as well. Incorrectly coded claims may result in services not being paid for, services being paid for at a lower rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Wewahitchka FL physicians and medical facilities many thousands of dollars in income every year, a proficient medical coder is a necessary asset to the healthcare team. They can work in any type of healthcare facility, including private practices, clinics, hospitals and urgent care centers. It is not unusual for professional medical coders to work at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Biller Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Wewahitchka FL As vital as the medical coder’s function is, it would be for naught without the collaboration of the medical biller whose labors produce revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Wewahitchka FL medical organizations and are essentially responsible for keeping them in business. Sometimes the coder and biller are the same person within a medical facility, but they can also be 2 independent specialists. Once the coder has performed her or his duty, the biller uses the codes provided to complete and submit claim forms to insurance carriers, Medicare or Medicaid. After they have been adjusted by the applicable entity, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles or additional out of pocket costs. On a routine basis, a medical biller might also do any of the following:

  • Confirm medical insurance benefits for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been declined
  • Function as an intermediary between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for accurate claim resolution
  • Create and control Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and manage unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only work for family practices, but also Wewahitchka FL hospitals, urgent care facilities, nursing homes or medical groups. They can practice in any type of medical facility that depends on the revenues generated by billing third party payers and patients.

Points to Ask Medical Coder and Biller Colleges

Questions to ask Wewahitchka FL medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a general idea just what a medical coder and biller does, in addition to what training options are available, you need to begin the process of evaluating colleges. But since there many training options available at community colleges as well as technical, trade and vocational schools within the Wewahitchka FL area, you should have a prepared list of questions to evaluate each one. And when you include all of the online colleges that offer medical coding and billing classes, the project can become somewhat formidable. As we have already discussed, location and cost are going to be important issues, particularly if you have a limited budget and will be driving to classes from your Wewahitchka residence. And whether or not the program and school are accredited should be part of your vetting process as well. So let’s review a few of the other questions that you should ask the schools you are looking at so that you can evaluate each one and make the best choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s crucial that the program and school you pick are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. Not only will accreditation help guarantee that the training you receive will be of the highest quality, it may help with your future employment also. Many Wewahitchka FL healthcare facilities will only employ entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing training course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for colleges that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the Program’s Reputation? Before enrolling in a medical billing and coding program, find out what its reputation and ranking are compared to other schools. This is especially relevant if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will primarily be evaluating you based on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, confirming that the program is accredited is a first step. Checking with school rating organizations, for example U.S. News and World Report, can confirm the quality of the school also. An alternative is to get in touch with several Wewahitchka FL healthcare organizations that you may have an interest in working for and ask which schools they recommend. Bear in mind that even if the school itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be highly regarded.

Is there a Job Assistance Program? Obtaining employment in Wewahitchka FL after graduating in your new profession may be challenging without the help of a job assistance program. Check if the colleges you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is an excellent indication that the billing and coding school has a considerable network of medical care employers where they can place their graduates. It also indicates that the school’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the College’s Location? If you are intending on driving to class from your Wewahitchka FL home, then the location of the campus will be of prime importance. Of course if you choose an online medical billing and coding program, then the location of the school will not be a consideration. One thing to keep in mind is that if you go to classes at a community or junior college, most charge a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you may prefer to first research those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Expense? Medical coding and billing training programs can vary in cost based on the type of credential acquired and the length of training furnished. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenditures also consist of such items as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial assistance might be available to help offset a portion of the expense, so don’t forget to check with the college’s financial assistance department to see what is available in Wewahitchka FL. Of course if you decide to enroll in an online school, a portion of these additional costs, such as for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Accommodate your Schedule? Many students keep working while going to school and require a flexible class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Wewahitchka FL, verify that they are available at those times. If you can only attend on a part time schedule, make sure that the school you pick offers that option. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up classes missed due to illness, work or family responsibilities.
