Medical Coder Job Summary

Traskwood AR patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Traskwood AR medical practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to analyze the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services may be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are several codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders depend on information from sources such as nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Medical Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all private payer and government rules that affect coding as well. Incorrectly coded claims may result in services not being paid for, services being paid at a reduced rate, or the provider being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can in fact cost Traskwood AR doctors and hospitals many thousands of dollars in earnings annually, a reliable medical coder is a necessary asset for any healthcare organization. They can work in any type of healthcare facility, including private practices, clinics, hospitals and urgent care centers. It is not unusual for seasoned medical coders to operate at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Billing Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Traskwood AR As vital as the medical coder’s function is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose labors generate revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Traskwood AR medical facilities and are practically responsible for keeping them in business. Often the biller and coder can be the same man or woman within a healthcare organization, but they can also be two individual specialists. When the coder has completed his or her job, the biller utilizes the codes provided to complete and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After they have been paid by the appropriate organization, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles and other out of pocket costs. On a routine basis, a medical billing professional can also do any of the following:

  • Check health insurance benefits for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Check on patient claims submitted and appeal any that have been denied
  • Function as an intermediary between the healthcare provider, the insurance companies and the patients for correct claim settlement
  • Create and control Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and deal with unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only work for family practices, but also Traskwood AR hospitals, urgent care facilities, medical groups or nursing homes. They can work in every kind of medical facility that depends on the revenues generated by billing third party payers and patients.

Even though it is not required in most cases to earn a professional certification, the program you enroll in should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). Most schools only require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to qualify. The fastest way to become either a medical coder or biller (or both) is to earn a certificate, which generally takes about a year to finish. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more extensive education, which for most colleges requires two years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical coding and billing are not abundantly available. After your education has been concluded, although not required in the majority of states, you may desire to earn a professional certification. Certification is an excellent means for those new to the field to show prospective Traskwood AR employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their career. Some of the organizations that make available certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Completing an accredited medical billing and coding course, combined with attaining a professional certification, are the best ways to advance your new career and succeed in the fast growing Traskwood AR medical care field.

And as an added benefit, online schools are often less expensive than the standard classroom alternatives. Expenses for such things as tuition, commuting and study materials may be reduced or eliminated. But be cautious, as not all online courses are reputable. For that reason it’s essential to establish that the online course you enroll in is accredited to ensure a premium education. We will cover the benefits of accreditation in the next segment. Just make sure to confirm that any online classes you are looking at is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, for example the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are disciplined enough to apply yourself to this type of learning, then earning your certificate or degree online may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Medical Billing and Coding Colleges

Questions to ask Traskwood AR medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a general idea just what a medical coder and biller does, in addition to what education options are available, you need to begin the process of evaluating colleges. But since there many training options available at community colleges as well as technical, trade and vocational schools within the Traskwood AR area, you need to have a ready list of questions in order to assess each one. And when you add all of the online colleges that offer medical billing and coding classes, the project can become somewhat formidable. As we have already discussed, expense and location are going to be significant factors, especially if you have a limited budget and will be commuting to classes from your Traskwood residence. And verifying that the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting process also. So let’s take a look at several of the other questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing so that you can analyze each one and make the ideal choice.

Is the School Accredited? It’s essential that the school and program you pick are accredited by a respected accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. Not only will accreditation help confirm that the education you get will be of the highest quality, it might help with your future employment as well. A number of Traskwood AR healthcare facilities will only employ entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing educational course. And financial assistance and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for programs that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to choosing a medical coding and billing college, check out what its reputation and ranking are compared to other schools. This is particularly important if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will basically be relying on the quality of your training. As we have covered, verifying that the college is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, for instance U.S. News and World Report, can validate the quality of the school also. An alternative is to get in touch with some Traskwood AR healthcare organizations that you might be interested in working for and find out which schools they suggest. Remember that even if the college itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be highly regarded.

Is there an Employment Placement Program? Finding a job in Traskwood AR after graduation in your new profession can be difficult without the support of a job placement program. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing school has a substantial network of healthcare employers where they can refer their graduates. It also suggests that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School Located? If you are intending on commuting to class from your Traskwood AR residence, then the location of the campus will be of significant importance. Obviously if you choose an medical billing and coding online program, then the location of the college will not be a factor. One thing to remember is that if you go to classes at a junior or community college, most require a higher tuition for pupils that reside outside of their districts. So you may want to first look at those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Cost? Medical coding and billing certification programs can vary in cost based on the type of credential obtained and the length of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenses also include such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial assistance may be accessible to help reduce a portion of the expense, so be sure to check with the college’s financial aid department to see what is offered in Traskwood AR. Naturally if you decide to enroll in an online school, a portion of these added costs, particularly for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Offered that Fit your Schedule? Many students keep working while attending college and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Traskwood AR, verify that they are available at those times. If you can only enroll on a part time basis, verify that the college you select provides that alternative. Also, find out what the process is for making up classes missed due to sickness, work or family responsibilities.
