Medical Coder Job Summary

Whittier AK patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the front line of the billing systems for Whittier AK medical practices and healthcare organizations. They have the responsibility to examine the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies used. There are various codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).

Medical coders use information from sources such as nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Improperly coded claims can result in services not being paid for, services being paid for at a lower rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Whittier AK hospitals and doctors many thousands of dollars in earnings each year, a good medical coder is a vital asset to the healthcare organization. They can work in every type of healthcare facility, including family practices, clinics, hospitals and critical care centers. It is not uncommon for seasoned medical coders to working from home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

For that reason it’s important to confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited to ensure a quality education. We will address the advantages of accreditation in the next section. Just be sure to confirm that any online college you are researching is accredited by one of the national accrediting agencies, for instance the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Things to Ask Medical Biller and Coder Training Programs

Questions to ask Whittier AK medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a better idea just what a medical biller and coder does, in addition to what education options are available, you must begin the process of comparing colleges. But since there a large number of training options offered at community colleges and trade, vocational and technical schools within the Whittier AK area, you need to have a ready list of questions to evaluate each one. And when you include all of the online schools that offer medical coding and billing classes, the project can become rather formidable. As we have already covered, expense and location are going to be significant issues, particularly if you have a limited budget and will be traveling to classes from your Whittier residence. And confirming that the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting process also. So let’s review a few of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering so that you can evaluate each one and make the best choice.

Is the School Accredited? It’s important that the program and school you decide on are accredited by a respected accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Not only will accreditation help confirm that the training you receive will be of superior quality, it may help with your future employment as well. A number of Whittier AK healthcare organizations will only employ entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing educational course. And financial assistance and student loans are frequently only offered for schools that have received an accreditation.

What is the Program’s Reputation? Prior to selecting a medical billing and coding school, find out what its reputation and ranking are compared to other schools. This is particularly important if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will mainly be relying on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, verifying that the college is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, for example U.S. News and World Report, can validate the quality of the school as well. An alternative is to call some Whittier AK medical organizations that you may be interested in working for and ask which colleges they recommend. Bear in mind that even when the college itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be highly regarded.

Is there an Employment Placement Program? Obtaining a job in Whittier AK after graduation in your new profession can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. Check if the colleges you are considering have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is an excellent indication that the billing and coding school has a substantial network of healthcare employers where they can refer their graduates. It also indicates that the school’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the College’s Location? If you are planning on commuting to class from your Whittier AK home, then the location of the program will be of prime importance. Of course if you select an online medical billing and coding program, then the location of the school will not be a factor. One thing to remember is that if you attend classes at a junior or community college, many require a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you might prefer to first consider those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Expense? Medical billing and coding certification courses can vary in cost depending on the type of credential acquired and the amount of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenses also consist of such items as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial assistance might be accessible to help reduce some of the expense, so don’t forget to check with the college’s financial assistance department to find out what is offered in Whittier AK. Of course if you decide to enroll in an online college, some of these additional costs, particularly for commuting may be lessened or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Fit your Schedule? A number of students keep working while attending school and require a convenient class schedule. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Whittier AK, make sure that they are offered at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you choose offers that option. Also, find out what the process is for making up classes missed because of sickness, work or family responsibilities.

    Whittier, Alaska

Whittier is a city at the head of the Passage Canal in the U.S. state of Alaska, about 58 miles (93 km) southeast of Anchorage.[5] The city is within the Valdez–Cordova Census Area. At the 2010 census the population was 220, up from 182 in 2000. The 2016 estimate was 214 people, almost all of whom live in a single building.[6] Whittier is also a port for the Alaska Marine Highway.[7]

The region occupied by Whittier was once part of the portage route of the Chugach people native to Prince William Sound. Later, the passage was used by Russian and American explorers, and by prospecting miners during the gold rush.[5] The nearby Whittier glacier was named for American poet John Greenleaf Whittier in 1915, and the town eventually took the name as well.[8]

During World War II, the United States Army constructed a military facility, complete with port and railroad near Whittier Glacier and named the facility Camp Sullivan. The spur of the Alaska Railroad to Camp Sullivan was completed in 1943 and the port became the entrance for United States soldiers into Alaska.[9]
