Medical Coder Job Duties

Point Lay AK patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Point Lay AK private practices and healthcare organizations. Coders have the responsibility to examine the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services can be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment utilized. There are several codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders rely on information from sources such as nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Medical Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all private payer and government rules that impact coding as well. Improperly coded claims may result in services not being covered, services being paid for at a reduced rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can in fact cost Point Lay AK hospitals and doctors multiple thousands of dollars in income annually, a reliable medical coder is an important asset for any healthcare team. They can operate in every kind of healthcare facility, including family practices, hospitals, clinics and emergency care centers. It is not uncommon for experienced medical coders to operate at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Biller Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Point Lay AK As crucial as the medical coder’s job is, it would be for naught without the collaboration of the medical biller whose efforts produce revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to Point Lay AK medical organizations and are essentially responsible for keeping their doors open. Sometimes the coder and biller are the same individual within a medical organization, but they can also be two independent specialists. After the coder has completed her or his duty, the biller utilizes the codes provided to complete and submit claim forms to insurance carriers, Medicaid or Medicare. After they have been adjusted by the appropriate entity, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles and additional out of pocket costs. On a routine basis, a medical biller may also do any of the following:

  • Check health insurance benefits for patients and help them with billing concerns or questions
  • Check on submitted patient claims and appeal those that have been denied
  • Act as an intermediate between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for accurate claim resolution
  • Generate and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and deal with unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billers not only work for private practices, but also Point Lay AK emergency care facilities, hospitals, medical groups or nursing homes. They may work in any type of medical facility that relies on the incomes generated from billing third party payers and patients.

While it is not required in many cases to obtain a professional certification, the program you select should be accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). The majority of programs simply require that you earn either a high school diploma or a GED to qualify. The fastest way to becoming either a medical coder or biller (or both) is to earn a certificate, which normally takes about 1 year to complete. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more comprehensive education, which for the majority of colleges calls for two years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees in medical coding and billing are not widely available. When your education has been concluded, although not mandated in the majority of states, you might want to attain a professional certification. Certification is a great way for those new to the field to show prospective Point Lay AK employers that they are not only qualified but committed to their occupation. Just some of the organizations that provide certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).

  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

And verifying that the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting procedure also. So let’s review a few of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are looking at so that you can analyze each one and make the appropriate choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s important that the program and school you select are accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Not only will accreditation help guarantee that the training you get will be of superior quality, it may help with your future employment also. A number of Point Lay AK healthcare facilities will only hire entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding training course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for schools that have earned an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to picking a medical billing and coding college, check out what its ranking and reputation are compared to other schools. This is particularly relevant if you have no experience in the profession, since potential employers will basically be relying on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, making sure that the college is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, for instance U.S. News and World Report, can confirm the quality of the school as well. Another option is to call a few Point Lay AK healthcare organizations that you may be interested in working for and ask which schools they recommend. Keep in mind that even if the school itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be well regarded.

Is there a Job Assistance Program? Finding employment in Point Lay AK after graduation in your new profession might be challenging without the help of a job assistance program. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is a good indication that the coding and billing school has a sizable network of healthcare employers where they can refer their graduates. It also implies that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are planning on commuting to class from your Point Lay AK residence, then the location of the school will be of significant importance. Of course if you select an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the college will not be a consideration. One thing to keep in mind is that if you attend classes at a junior or community college, many require a higher tuition for enrollees that reside outside of their districts. So you may prefer to first consider those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Expense? Medical billing and coding training programs can vary in cost based on the type of credential obtained and the length of training furnished. But remember, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenses also consist of such items as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial assistance might be obtainable to help reduce some of the expense, so make sure to get in touch with the school’s financial aid department to see what is offered in Point Lay AK. Naturally if you decide to attend an online college, some of these added costs, such as for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Accessible that Fit your Schedule? A number of students continue working while attending college and require a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Point Lay AK, confirm that they are available at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, check that the college you choose provides that option.
