Medical Coding Job Duties

Platinum AK patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Platinum AK private practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to analyze the medical records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services can be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment used. There are various codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders depend on information from sources including physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accurate reporting, but must have a functioning knowledge of all government and private payer rules that influence coding as well. Improperly coded claims can lead to services not being covered, services being paid at a decreased rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can literally cost Platinum AK doctors and hospitals multiple thousands of dollars in revenue every year, a reliable medical coder is a vital asset to the healthcare team. They can operate in every type of healthcare facility, including family practices, clinics, hospitals and urgent care centers. It is not uncommon for seasoned medical coders to work at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Biller Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Platinum AK As crucial as the medical coder’s function is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose efforts bring in revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Platinum AK medical organizations and are essentially responsible for keeping them in business. In many cases the coder and biller can be the same individual within a healthcare facility, but they can also be 2 separate specialists. After the coder has performed her or his task, the biller uses the codes furnished to complete and submit claim forms to insurance carriers, Medicare or Medicaid. After they have been paid by the appropriate entity, patients can then be billed for deductibles or additional out of pocket expenses. On a routine basis, a medical billing clerk can also do any of the following:

  • Verify medical insurance coverages for patients and help them with billing questions or concerns
  • Follow up on submitted patient claims and appeal any that have been denied
  • Work as an intermediate between the medical provider, the insurance companies and the patients for accurate claim settlement
  • Create and control Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and deal with unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only work for family practices, but also Platinum AK emergency care facilities, hospitals, medical groups or nursing homes. They may work in every kind of healthcare facility that depends on the revenues generated from billing third party payers and patients.

Medical Billing and Coding Instruction and Certification

instructor with Platinum AK medical billing and coding class studentIt’s imperative that you get your training from a reputable school, whether it’s a technical school, vocational school or community college. Even though it is not a requirement in most cases to attain a professional certification, the school you select should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). Most colleges only require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to qualify. The quickest way to become either a medical biller or coder (or both) is to attain a certificate, which usually takes about 1 year to finish. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more comprehensive education, which for almost all schools calls for 2 years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical billing and coding are not widely offered. After your education has been completed, although not required in most states, you might wish to earn a professional certification. Certification is an effective means for those new to the profession to show potential Platinum AK employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their career. Just some of the organizations that make available certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Graduating from an accredited medical billing and coding program, along with earning a professional certification, are the best ways to advance your new career and succeed in the fast growing Platinum AK medical care field.

For that reason it’s essential to establish that the online program you enroll in is accredited to ensure a superior education. We will review the benefits of accreditation in the next section. Just be sure to establish that any online college you are considering is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, for example the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are disciplined enough to commit yourself to this style of learning, then acquiring your degree or certificate online might be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Medical Billing and Coding Colleges

Questions to ask Platinum AK medical billing and coding schoolsNow that you have a better idea just what a medical coder and biller does, in addition to what training options are available, you need to start the process of evaluating schools. But since there a large number of training options offered at community colleges and trade, vocational and technical schools within the Platinum AK area, you must have a ready list of questions in order to evaluate each one. And when you include all of the online colleges that offer medical coding and billing classes, the project can become somewhat daunting. As we have already discussed, cost and location are going to be significant factors, especially if you have a modest budget and will be driving to classes from your Platinum home. And verifying that the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting procedure as well. So let’s review some of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering so that you can evaluate each one and make the appropriate choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s vital that the school and program you select are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online school, it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the training you receive will be of superior quality, it might help secure future employment also. A number of Platinum AK healthcare facilities will only hire entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding training program. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for colleges that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to choosing a medical billing and coding school, check out what its ranking and reputation are among other colleges. This is especially relevant if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will mostly be relying on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, verifying that the school is accredited is a first step. Checking with school rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school as well. Another option is to call some Platinum AK medical organizations that you might be interested in working for and find out which colleges they suggest. Remember that even when the college itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be highly regarded.

Is there a Job Placement Program? Finding a job in Platinum AK after graduating in your new field might be difficult without the help of a job placement program. Check if the colleges you are considering have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing school has a significant network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also implies that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are anticipating commuting to class from your Platinum AK residence, then the location of the campus will be of prime importance. Naturally if you enroll in an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the college will not be a factor. One thing to bear in mind is that if you attend classes at a community or junior college, most charge a higher tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you may prefer to first consider those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Expense? Medical coding and billing training programs can differ in cost depending on the type of credential earned and the amount of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenses also consist of such items as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial aid may be accessible to help offset some of the cost, so don’t forget to get in touch with the school’s financial assistance department to find out what is offered in Platinum AK. Naturally if you decide to enroll in an online school, a portion of these added costs, such as for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Accommodate your Schedule? A number of students keep working while going to college and require a flexible class schedule. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Platinum AK, make sure that they are offered at those times. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make sure that the program you enroll in offers that alternative. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up classes missed because of sickness, work or family responsibilities.
