Medical Coder Job Summary

Pelican AK patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Pelican AK medical practices and hospitals. They have the responsibility to examine the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services can be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are several codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Medical Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accuracy, but must have a working knowledge of all government and private payer rules that impact coding as well. Incorrectly coded claims can lead to services not being covered, services being paid for at a reduced rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can in fact cost Pelican AK hospitals and doctors many thousands of dollars in income every year, a reliable medical coder is a necessary asset for any healthcare organization. They can operate in any type of healthcare facility, including private practices, hospitals, clinics and emergency care centers. It is not uncommon for seasoned medical coders to working from home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Billing Job Functions

medical billing collects revenue in Pelican AK As vital as the medical coder’s role is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose labors bring in revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Pelican AK medical organizations and are essentially responsible for keeping them in business. In many cases the biller and coder are the same individual within a medical organization, but they can also be 2 independent specialists. After the coder has completed her or his job, the biller uses the codes supplied to complete and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After they have been paid by the applicable entity, patients can then be billed for deductibles or other out of pocket expenses. On a regular basis, a medical billing clerk can also do any of the following:

  • Check medical insurance benefits for patients and assist them with billing questions or concerns
  • Check on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been denied
  • Work as a mediator between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for correct claim settlement
  • Generate and manage Accounts Receivables reports
  • Create and take care of unpaid patient collections accounts

That’s why it’s imperative to confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited to guarantee a quality education. We will review the advantages of accreditation in the next segment. Just make sure to check that any online training you are considering is accredited by one of the national accrediting agencies, such as the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are disciplined enough to commit yourself to this type of learning, then obtaining your degree or certificate online might be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Medical Billing and Coding Schools

Questions to ask Pelican AK medical billing and coding schoolsNow that you have a better idea what a medical coder and biller does, along with what education options are offered, you must begin the process of researching schools. But since there are numerous training options available at community colleges and technical, trade and vocational schools within the Pelican AK area, you need to have a prepared list of questions to assess each one. And when you add all of the online colleges that offer medical coding and billing classes, the project can become somewhat formidable. As we have already discussed, location and cost are going to be relevant issues, particularly if you have a limited budget and will be commuting to classes from your Pelican residence. And confirming that the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting process as well. So let’s take a look at some of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are looking at so that you can evaluate each one and make the best choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s important that the program and college you select are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the education you get will be of superior quality, it might help secure future employment as well. A number of Pelican AK medical facilities will only hire entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding educational course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only available for programs that have received an accreditation.

What is the Program’s Reputation? Before choosing a medical billing and coding college, check out what its reputation and ranking are compared to other schools. This is especially relevant if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will basically be relying on the quality of your education. As we have covered, verifying that the school is accredited is an initial step. Checking with school rating organizations, for instance U.S. News and World Report, can confirm the quality of the school as well. Another option is to contact some Pelican AK healthcare organizations that you may have an interest in working for and ask which colleges they suggest. Bear in mind that even when the school itself does not have an outstanding reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be well regarded.

Is there an Employment Placement Program? Obtaining employment in Pelican AK after graduation in your new profession might be difficult without the help of a job assistance program. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing school has a sizable network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also indicates that the college’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the College’s Location? If you are planning on commuting to class from your Pelican AK residence, then the location of the campus will be of prime importance. Of course if you choose an online medical coding and billing program, then the location of the school will not be a consideration. One thing to bear in mind is that if you attend classes at a community or junior college, many charge a higher tuition for enrollees that reside outside of their districts. So you might prefer to first look at those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Total Cost? Medical coding and billing training programs can vary in cost based on the type of credential earned and the amount of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenses also consist of such things as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial assistance may be obtainable to help reduce a portion of the cost, so make sure to get in touch with the school’s financial aid department to see what is offered in Pelican AK. Of course if you decide to enroll in an online school, some of these added costs, such as for commuting may be lessened or even eliminated.

Are Classes Accessible that Fit your Schedule? Many students keep working while going to college and need a flexible class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Pelican AK, verify that they are available at those times. If you can only enroll on a part-time schedule, make sure that the school you choose provides that option. Also, ask what the process is for making up classes missed because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
