Medical Coder Job Duties

Nightmute AK patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the forefront of the billing systems for Nightmute AK private practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to review the medical records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services can be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are several codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources including physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accurate reporting, but must have a functioning knowledge of all government and private payer regulations that impact coding also. Inaccurately coded claims may lead to services not being covered, services being paid for at a decreased rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Nightmute AK doctors and hospitals many thousands of dollars in income annually, a good medical coder is a vital asset to the healthcare team. They can work in every type of healthcare facility, including family practices, hospitals, clinics and emergency care centers. It is not uncommon for experienced medical coders to work at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Biller Job Functions

medical billing collects revenue in Nightmute AK As vital as the medical coder’s function is, it would be for nothing without the collaboration of the medical biller whose efforts produce revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Nightmute AK medical organizations and are essentially responsible for keeping them in business. Frequently the biller and coder are the same person within a healthcare facility, but they can also be 2 independent specialists. When the coder has performed his or her task, the biller utilizes the codes furnished to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After being adjusted by the appropriate entity, patients can then be charged for deductibles or additional out of pocket expenses. On a regular basis, a medical billing clerk may also do any of the following:

  • Check medical insurance benefits for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Check on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been declined
  • Act as an intermediate between the medical provider, the insurance companies and the patients for proper claim resolution
  • Produce and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and deal with unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billers not only work for private practices, but also Nightmute AK hospitals, urgent care facilities, nursing homes or medical groups. They may practice in every type of healthcare facility that relies on the revenues generated from billing patients and third party payers.

Bachelor’s Degrees for medical billing and coding are not widely available. After your training has been concluded, although not required in the majority of states, you may want to attain a professional certification. Certification is an excellent method for those new to the profession to show potential Nightmute AK employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their occupation. Just some of the organizations that make available certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).

  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

And verifying that the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting process also. So let’s take a look at several of the other questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at so that you can analyze each one and make the right choice.

Is the School Accredited? It’s important that the program and college you pick are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the education you get will be of the highest quality, it may help with your future employment as well. A number of Nightmute AK medical organizations will only hire entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing training course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only offered for colleges that have earned an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to selecting a medical billing and coding program, check out what its ranking and reputation are among other schools. This is particularly relevant if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will mainly be evaluating you based on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, confirming that the program is accredited is an initial step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school as well. Another option is to check with a few Nightmute AK medical organizations that you might be interested in working for and find out which schools they suggest. Bear in mind that even if the school itself does not have an outstanding reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be well regarded.

Is there an Employment Placement Program? Finding a job in Nightmute AK after graduation in your new field might be difficult without the support of a job placement program. Check if the schools you are looking at have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is an excellent indication that the billing and coding college has a considerable network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also implies that the school’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are intending on driving to class from your Nightmute AK residence, then the location of the program will be of prime importance. Obviously if you enroll in an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the school will not be a consideration. One thing to keep in mind is that if you attend classes at a junior or community college, many require a higher tuition for enrollees that reside outside of their districts. So you might prefer to first look at those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Cost? Medical billing and coding training courses can vary in cost based on the type of credential acquired and the amount of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenses also include such things as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid might be available to help reduce some of the expense, so make sure to get in touch with the school’s financial assistance department to find out what is available in Nightmute AK. Naturally if you decide to attend an online school, some of these additional costs, such as for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Offered that Fit your Schedule? Many students keep working while attending college and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Nightmute AK, confirm that they are available at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers that option. Also, find out what the process is for making up classes missed due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
