Medical Coding Job Summary

Gakona AK patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the forefront of the billing systems for Gakona AK medical practices and healthcare organizations. They have the responsibility to review the medical records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies used. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders depend on information from sources such as nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all government and private payer rules that impact coding as well. Improperly coded claims can lead to services not being covered, services being paid at a decreased rate, or the provider being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can in fact cost Gakona AK physicians and medical facilities multiple thousands of dollars in income each year, a reliable medical coder is an important asset to the healthcare team. They can work in any type of healthcare facility, including family practices, clinics, hospitals and urgent care centers. It is not uncommon for experienced medical coders to operate at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

On a routine basis, a medical billing clerk might also do any of the following:

  • Confirm medical insurance benefits for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Check on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been declined
  • Function as an intermediary between the medical provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for accurate claim settlement
  • Create and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Generate and handle unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only are employed by family practices, but also Gakona AK emergency care facilities, hospitals, medical groups or nursing homes. They may work in any type of healthcare facility that depends on the incomes generated from billing third party payers and patients.

Medical Coder and Biller Instruction and Certification

instructor with Gakona AK medical billing and coding class studentIt’s imperative that you receive your education from a reputable school, whether it’s a community college, technical or trade school. Although it is not required in most cases to attain a professional certification, the school you enroll in should be accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). Most schools only require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to be eligible. The most expedient way to becoming either a medical biller or coder (or both) is to attain a certificate, which usually takes about 1 year to complete. An Associate Degree is also an option for a more expansive education, which for almost all colleges requires two years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical billing and coding are not widely available. When your education has been concluded, although not mandated in most states, you might want to earn a professional certification. Certification is an excellent means for those new to the profession to show prospective Gakona AK employers that they are not only qualified but committed to their occupation. A few of the organizations that offer certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Completing an accredited medical billing and coding course, together with earning a professional certification, are the most effective ways to accelerate your new career and succeed in the rapid growing Gakona AK healthcare field.

And as an added advantage, online colleges are in many cases less expensive than the standard classroom options. Costs for such things as tuition, commuting and study materials may be reduced or eliminated. But be careful, as not all online courses are reputable. For that reason it’s important to verify that the online course you enroll in is accredited to ensure a superior education. We will address the benefits of accreditation in the next segment. Just make sure to verify that any online instruction you are researching is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, for example the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are dedicated enough to apply yourself to this type of learning, then obtaining your certificate or degree online may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Medical Biller and Coder Schools

Questions to ask Gakona AK medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a better idea what a medical coder and biller does, in addition to what education options are offered, you need to begin the process of evaluating colleges. But since there many training options available at community colleges as well as vocational, technical and trade schools within the Gakona AK area, you must have a ready list of questions in order to assess each one. And when you include all of the online programs that offer medical billing and coding classes, the project can become somewhat formidable. As we have already addressed, location and cost are going to be important factors, especially if you have a limited budget and will be traveling to classes from your Gakona home. And whether or not the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting process also. So let’s review a few of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing so that you can evaluate each one and make the right choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s vital that the program and school you decide on are accredited by a respected accrediting organization, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. Not only will accreditation help guarantee that the training you get will be of the highest quality, it could help with your future employment as well. Many Gakona AK medical organizations will only employ entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding training course. And financial aid and student loans are often only offered for schools that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to choosing a medical billing and coding program, find out what its ranking and reputation are among other colleges. This is especially imperative if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will mainly be relying on the quality of your education. As we have covered, confirming that the school is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, for example U.S. News and World Report, can confirm the quality of the school as well. An alternative is to call several Gakona AK healthcare organizations that you may be interested in working for and find out which colleges they suggest. Bear in mind that even when the school itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be highly regarded.

Is there an Employment Placement Program? Finding employment in Gakona AK after graduation in your new profession may be difficult without the support of a job placement program. Ask if the colleges you are considering have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is a good indication that the coding and billing school has a significant network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also indicates that the school’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the College Located? If you are anticipating commuting to class from your Gakona AK residence, then the location of the campus will be of significant importance. Obviously if you choose an medical billing and coding online program, then the location of the college will not be a consideration. One thing to bear in mind is that if you go to classes at a junior or community college, many charge a higher tuition for pupils that reside outside of their districts. So you may prefer to first look at those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Expense? Medical billing and coding training courses can fluctuate in cost based on the type of credential earned and the length of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenses also consist of such items as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial aid may be obtainable to help offset a portion of the cost, so be sure to get in touch with the school’s financial aid department to find out what is offered in Gakona AK. Of course if you decide to enroll in an online college, a portion of these additional costs, particularly for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Offered that Match your Schedule? A number of students continue working while going to college and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Gakona AK, confirm that they are available at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, confirm that the school you enroll in provides that alternative. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up classes missed due to sickness, work or family responsibilities.
