Medical Coder Job Functions

Big Lake AK patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the front line of the billing systems for Big Lake AK medical practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to review the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies used. There are multiple codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all private payer and government regulations that impact coding as well. Inaccurately coded claims can lead to services not being paid for, services being paid for at a reduced rate, or the provider being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can in fact cost Big Lake AK hospitals and doctors multiple thousands of dollars in income every year, a good medical coder is an important asset to the healthcare organization. They can work in every type of healthcare facility, including family practices, clinics, hospitals and urgent care centers. It is not unusual for experienced medical coders to work at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Billing Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Big Lake AK As essential as the medical coder’s job is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose efforts bring in revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to Big Lake AK healthcare organizations and are essentially responsible for keeping their doors open. In many cases the biller and coder may be the same man or woman within a healthcare organization, but they can also be two independent specialists. Once the coder has completed his or her job, the biller utilizes the codes supplied to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicaid or Medicare. After being paid by the applicable entity, patients can then be billed for deductibles or other out of pocket costs. On a routine basis, a medical biller may also do any of the following:

  • Confirm medical insurance coverages for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Check on patient claims submitted and appeal any that have been denied
  • Function as an intermediary between the medical provider, the insurance companies and the patients for correct claim settlement
  • Create and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Generate and deal with unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billers not only work for private practices, but also Big Lake AK hospitals, urgent care facilities, medical groups or nursing homes. They can practice in any kind of medical facility that relies on the incomes generated from billing patients and third party payers.

Medical Coding and Billing Training and Certification

instructor with Big Lake AK medical billing and coding class studentIt’s imperative that you get your training from a reputable school, whether it’s a trade school, vocational school or community college. Although it is not a requirement in many cases to obtain a professional certification, the program you select should be accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). Most programs simply require that you earn either a high school diploma or a GED to appy. The quickest way to become either a medical biller or coder (or both) is to earn a certificate, which normally takes about 1 year to finish. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more comprehensive education, which for most schools requires two years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees in medical billing and coding are not widely offered. After your education has been concluded, although not required in the majority of states, you may want to attain a professional certification. Certification is an excellent means for those new to the profession to show prospective Big Lake AK employers that they are not only qualified but committed to their occupation. Some of the organizations that make available certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Graduating from an accredited medical billing and coding program, together with obtaining a professional certification, are the best ways to accelerate your new vocation and succeed in the fast growing Big Lake AK medical care industry.

And as an additional advantage, online colleges are often less expensive than the standard classroom options. Expenses for such items as tuition, commuting and study materials may be reduced or eliminated. But be cautious, as not all online programs are reputable. That’s why it’s imperative to confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited to guarantee a premium education. We will review the advantages of accreditation in the next segment. Just make sure to establish that any online college you are considering is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, for instance the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are disciplined enough to devote yourself to this mode of learning, then earning your certificate or degree online might be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Medical Biller and Coder Colleges

Questions to ask Big Lake AK medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a general idea just what a medical biller and coder does, in addition to what education options are offered, you must start the process of evaluating colleges. But since there a large number of training options available at community colleges as well as technical, trade and vocational schools within the Big Lake AK area, you need to have a ready list of questions to assess each one. And when you add all of the online colleges that offer medical billing and coding classes, the task can become somewhat daunting. As we have already discussed, expense and location are going to be relevant issues, especially if you have a limited budget and will be traveling to classes from your Big Lake home. And whether or not the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting process as well. So let’s review some of the additional questions that you should ask the programs you are considering so that you can analyze each one and make the best choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s crucial that the program and school you select are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online school, it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. Not only will accreditation help confirm that the training you receive will be of superior quality, it could help with your future employment also. Many Big Lake AK medical organizations will only hire entry level applicants that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing training program. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only offered for schools that have earned an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to picking a medical coding and billing college, find out what its ranking and reputation are compared to other programs. This is particularly important if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will mainly be evaluating you based on the quality of your education. As we have addressed, verifying that the program is accredited is an initial step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school also. Another option is to get in touch with a few Big Lake AK healthcare organizations that you may have an interest in working for and ask which programs they suggest. Keep in mind that even if the college itself does not have an outstanding reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be well regarded.

Is there a Job Referral Program? Obtaining a job in Big Lake AK after graduating in your new profession might be difficult without the help of a job assistance program. Check if the schools you are looking at have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is a good indication that the coding and billing school has a substantial network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also indicates that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are intending on driving to class from your Big Lake AK residence, then the location of the program will be of prime importance. Obviously if you enroll in an online medical billing and coding program, then the location of the school will not be a consideration. One thing to bear in mind is that if you attend classes at a community or junior college, many charge a higher tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you might want to first look at those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Expense? Medical billing and coding training courses can differ in cost depending on the type of credential acquired and the length of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenditures also include such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid might be available to help offset a portion of the cost, so be sure to get in touch with the college’s financial assistance department to see what is offered in Big Lake AK. Of course if you decide to enroll in an online school, a portion of these additional costs, such as for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Match your Schedule? Many students continue working while attending college and require a convenient class schedule. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Big Lake AK, make sure that they are offered at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the program you decide on provides that alternative. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up classes missed because of sickness, work or family emergencies.
