Medical Coding Job Functions

Cowarts AL patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Cowarts AL medical practices and healthcare organizations. Coders have the responsibility to analyze the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment used. There are multiple codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders depend on information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accurate reporting, but must have a functioning knowledge of all government and private payer regulations that impact coding also. Incorrectly coded claims can lead to services not being covered, services being paid at a decreased rate, or the provider being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Cowarts AL physicians and medical facilities many thousands of dollars in earnings every year, a reliable medical coder is a vital asset for any healthcare organization. They can operate in every type of healthcare facility, including private practices, hospitals, clinics and emergency care centers. It is not unusual for professional medical coders to operate at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Financial assistance might be accessible to help reduce some of the expense, so be sure to contact the college’s financial assistance department to find out what is available in Cowarts AL. Of course if you decide to attend an online college, a portion of these additional costs, particularly for commuting may be lessened or even eliminated.
