Medical Coding Job Description

Coker AL patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the forefront of the billing systems for Coker AL medical practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to review the treatment records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies used. There are multiple codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Medical Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accurate reporting, but must have a working knowledge of all private payer and government regulations that impact coding also. Incorrectly coded claims may result in services not being covered, services being paid at a lower rate, or the provider being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can literally cost Coker AL hospitals and doctors many thousands of dollars in revenue annually, a reliable medical coder is a vital asset to the healthcare organization. They can operate in any type of healthcare facility, including family practices, clinics, hospitals and critical care centers. It is not unusual for seasoned medical coders to work at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Billing Job Functions

medical billing collects revenue in Coker AL As vital as the medical coder’s role is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose efforts generate revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Coker AL healthcare organizations and are practically responsible for keeping them in business. Often the biller and coder are the same individual within a medical facility, but they can also be 2 separate professionals. Once the coder has performed her or his job, the biller utilizes the codes furnished to complete and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After they have been paid by the applicable entity, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles and additional out of pocket costs. On a regular basis, a medical billing professional can also do any of the following:

  • Confirm health insurance coverages for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Check on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been declined
  • Work as an intermediary between the medical provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for correct claim resolution
  • Create and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Create and manage unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billers not only work for family practices, but also Coker AL emergency care facilities, hospitals, medical groups or nursing homes. They may work in any kind of healthcare facility that relies on the revenues generated by billing patients and third party payers.

instructor with Coker AL medical billing and coding class studentIt’s essential that you get your education from a reputable school, whether it’s a technical school, vocational school or community college. Although it is not a requirement in most cases to obtain a professional certification, the school you enroll in should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). The majority of schools just require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to appy. The most expedient way to become either a medical biller or coder (or both) is to attain a certificate, which normally takes about 1 year to complete. An Associate Degree is also an option for a more expansive education, which for most colleges requires two years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical billing and coding are not abundantly available. After your education has been concluded, although not mandated in most states, you might want to attain a professional certification. Certification is an effective means for those new to the field to show potential Coker AL employers that they are not only qualified but committed to their occupation. Some of the organizations that offer certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Completing an accredited medical billing and coding program, combined with earning a professional certification, are the most effective ways to advance your new profession and succeed in the rapid growing Coker AL medical care field.

And as an additional benefit, online colleges are frequently cheaper than the conventional classroom alternatives. Costs for such items as tuition, commuting and study materials may be minimized or eliminated. But be careful, as not all online schools are reputable. For that reason it’s essential to confirm that the online program you select is accredited to ensure a quality education. We will address the advantages of accreditation in the next segment. Just be sure to establish that any online training you are researching is accredited by one of the national accrediting agencies, for example the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are dedicated enough to commit yourself to this mode of learning, then acquiring your degree or certificate online may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Medical Coder and Biller Programs

Questions to ask Coker AL medical billing and coding schoolsNow that you have a better idea what a medical biller and coder does, in addition to what training options are offered, you need to start the process of researching schools. But since there are numerous training options offered at community colleges as well as vocational, technical and trade schools within the Coker AL area, you need to have a ready list of questions to evaluate each one. And when you add all of the online programs that offer medical coding and billing classes, the project can become rather formidable. As we have already covered, location and cost are going to be important issues, particularly if you have a limited budget and will be traveling to classes from your Coker home. And verifying that the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting process as well. So let’s review several of the other questions that you should ask the programs you are considering so that you can evaluate each one and make the appropriate choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s vital that the program and school you pick are accredited by a respected accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the training you receive will be of the highest quality, it could help secure future employment also. Many Coker AL healthcare organizations will only employ entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing training program. And financial aid and student loans are often only available for programs that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the Program’s Reputation? Prior to picking a medical billing and coding college, check out what its ranking and reputation are among other programs. This is particularly imperative if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will basically be relying on the quality of your education. As we have covered, verifying that the college is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can confirm the quality of the school as well. Another option is to call some Coker AL healthcare organizations that you might have an interest in working for and ask which schools they suggest. Keep in mind that even if the college itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be highly regarded.

Is there an Employment Placement Program? Finding employment in Coker AL after graduating in your new profession might be challenging without the help of a job assistance program. Ask if the schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing college has a sizable network of healthcare employers where they can place their graduates. It also implies that the school’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School Located? If you are anticipating driving to class from your Coker AL residence, then the location of the school will be of prime importance. Of course if you enroll in an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the school will not be a factor. One thing to keep in mind is that if you go to classes at a community or junior college, many charge a higher tuition for pupils that live outside of their districts. So you might prefer to first research those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Expense? Medical coding and billing certification courses can fluctuate in cost based on the type of credential acquired and the amount of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenses also consist of such items as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial aid might be obtainable to help reduce a portion of the cost, so don’t forget to get in touch with the college’s financial aid department to see what is available in Coker AL. Naturally if you decide to attend an online college, a portion of these additional costs, such as for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Offered that Match your Schedule? Many students keep working while attending college and require a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Coker AL, confirm that they are available at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time schedule, check that the program you select provides that alternative. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up classes missed due to illness, work or family emergencies.
